There are many student organizations that address culture and/or global issues, and you will have the opportunity to meet their representatives and find out more at the Activities Fair. From these many student groups, there are two organizations that address the international student community as a whole:
BRIO – Brown International Organization
Buxton International House
First-years are assigned to first-year residence halls, exclusively in double rooms. For any issues regarding rooms or roommates, the right office to contact is the Office of Residential Life (Res_Life@brown.edu or (401) 863-3500).
Sophomores can either enter into the housing lottery (singles, doubles and suites in general university dormitories) or alternative housing such as program houses or cooperatives. Typically, sophomores willing to have a single with no preference to location will get a single.
Off-campus housing is primarily for seniors. However, juniors may apply for permission for off-campus housing.
For those wishing to exercise or play sports at Brown at a non-Varsity level, there are many options.
Eager athletes can join club teams (restricted to a few sports, including tennis and soccer) or intramural teams (volley-ball, soccer, softball…). The playing fields behind the OMAC and Pembroke field are open for Brown students to play on. The swimming pool, indoor tennis, and squash facilities are some of the other sporting amenities available to Brown students free of charge. Gyms are spread out throughout campus: in the OMAC, Bear's Lair, Keeney Quadrangle, and Morriss Hall.
College food can get pretty boring after a while, though Brown does have several, varied eating facilities. We have the Sharpe Refectory (commonly called the Ratty) the story behind that name is mainly composed of viscious rumors by people who much prefer the other big dining hall on campus, the Verney-Wooley Dining Hall, also known as the V-Dub. There is the Gate, which is a more informal set-up with couches, paninis, pizzas, sandwiches and late hours, as well as Josiah's (Jo's) and the Ivy Room which open in the evening at stay open till late at night. While Jo's has the traditional burgers and wraps, the Ivy Room is full of vegetarian cuisine, from falafels to rice and beans.
