The following classes are open to current Brown graduate students in the Graduate Lounge free of charge. Please consult the GSC Calendar for potential schedule changes.

Mondays 6:30 – 7:30
Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:30

There will be an hour-long Pilates class in the Grad Lounge every Monday at 6:30 PM and every Wednesday at 5:30 PM for the rest of the semester – you’re welcome to attend every session, once a week, or just whenever you’re able.

Pilates is a core-strengthening series of exercises that targets your abs and back, while creating long, lean muscles in the legs and arms. In the short term, you’ll leave class feeling more energized and pleasantly sore. We’ll use the Pilates method (controlled motions, focused breathing) to work through a variety of standing, seated, and mat exercises. This class is appropriate for individuals of all skill levels: if you’re a beginner, more advanced, have injuries, etc., we’ll find modifications to accommodate you. The class will work towards progressively more advanced or challenging exercises through the course of the semester, but again, it’s not necessary to attend every session.

We’ll focus on proper technique throughout the semester so that you get the most out of each class. The Wednesday session each week will repeat the Monday sequence, enabling those with regular Monday or Wednesday evening obligations to keep up, and for those who can come twice weekly to really focus on mastering form and breathing. We will usually have an upper body, lower body, or acupressure emphasis each week: for at least the first two weeks, however, we’ll be working on the core sequences to establish a firm basis. If you’re a seasoned Pilates practitioner, you know that you can always make these exercises harder with simple modifications and by isolating specific muscle groups and perfecting technique.

The Grad Lounge is stocked with all the equipment you’ll need, though you may want to bring your own Pilates or yoga mat if you have one. Yoga or exercise clothing is appropriate (I usually stick with a t-shirt and leggings) and you won’t be wearing shoes during class. Please also bring your Brown ID to swipe to enter the Grad Lounge.

Dance Workout
with Diane Wetzel

Tuesday 5:30 – 6:30
Thursdays 5:30 – 6:30

If you didn’t have a chance to try out the Tuesday classes offered by the GSC last semester, come check it out! This will be a conditioning class using dance to focus on building strength, endurance, and flexibility. We’ll work the arms, legs, back, and abs while having fun listening to some great music. No dance experience is necessary, but if you have dance experience, please join us–we can always find ways to make things more challenging.
Not sure what to wear? Some yoga pants, jogging pants, sweatpants, basketball shorts, volleyball shorts (you get the idea) and a t-shirt.
