Description

Have you ever wondered how to turn your old CD jewel cases into wall art? Did you realize that all those used water bottles you have lying around could make a unique chandelier? As you think about the tons of materials recycled every day, do you picture cans, bottles, and newspapers being used in exciting new ways?

At EWB’s Reinvent recycling contest, all of your unique ideas can become a reality as you release your inner conservationist! On Saturday, April 5, from 1-5pm, EWB will host teams on the main green to turn recycled garbage into useful inventions and works of art. We provide the recycled materials (you can bring your own too!), and you provide the creative and technical skills, as well as your imagination.

Each team of up to six members (professors welcome too) will have a few hours to take their materials, put their heads together, and produce the most interesting new gadget or artwork. As soon as you're ready, the judges will give you a chance to explain their creation or describe their piece. Prizes will be awarded in several categories.

Who's Invited?

All Brown and RISD students and professors. We reward both technical innovation and artistic creativity! Each team may have up to six members.

What Should I Bring?

We will supply some materials (the list will be posted here closer to the event), but you can bring anything you want. There are no rules other that the materials must be used in an original way. We expect most teams to bring water bottles, cardboard boxes, and the like, but if you have an old generator or "borrowed" university materials lying around, we won't stop you! Devices can be electrical, mechanical, solar powered, wind powered... whatever your mind tells you!

You might want to bring a blanket or towel, and anything else you'll want when you camp out on the Main Green.

What Happens if I Win?

Good question! Trophies and gift certificates will be awarded for several titles, such as Top Invention and Best Artistic Expression. All finalists will be showcased in the a gallery planned in the lobby of Barus & Holley! Trophies and gift certificates will be awarded at the gallery's opening!
