Asian American Students Association
AASA aims to build a conscious, inclusive Asian American community by critically examining our histories of colonialism and immigration, actively defining a space for Asian Americans in the struggle for Third World liberation. Furthermore, AASA is dedicated to challenging all forms of oppression, including racism, sexism, heterosexism, and classism, and recognizes their historical and current manifestations in systems of imperialism and the exploitation of people of color.
Brown International Organization (BRIO)
BRIO originated in 1983 as a peer support group for foreign students who were unfamiliar with the many customs inherent to the university system in the United States, and for internationally-minded American students. BRIO has established a network of close support groups, the primary goal of which is to help familiarize fellow internationals with the many responsibilities and expectations of being in an Ivy League institution. BRIO also seeks to bring international cultures to the Brown Community.
Brown Chinese Students Association (CSA)
CSA was formed to help further political and social aspects of Chinese culture here at Brown. Aside from numerous annual activities, CSA is also responsible for lectures and activities that serve to instigate discussion and promote a strong community. Though started by only a handful of students, CSA presently serves a xommunity of a few hundred people and is one of the largest Asian American student groups on campus.
Brown Filipino Alliance (FA)
FA is dedicated to maintaining and promoting the awareness of Filipino culture and heritage at Brown University. The Filipino Alliance works actively to foster a sense of ethnic pride and camaraderie within the Filipino community. Furthermore, FA is dedicated to supporting other Third World communities and working with other groups to promote Third Word unity.
Brown Hong Kong Students Association (HKSA)
HKSA promotes Hong Kong customs and culture. One of HKSA’s main goals is to increase awareness of Hong Kong within the Brown and Providence community. HKSA also strives to provide strong support and networks for our members and alumni in Hong Kong. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join and participate in our activities. Past events include movies, dim sum trips, cultural performances, Chinese festival celebrations, karaoke nights, and social gatherings at Brown and Hong Kong.
Brown Japanese Cultural Association (JCA)
JCA brings together anyone who is interested in any aspect of Japan. It shares and promotes awareness of Japan by exploring diverse elements of Japan’s rich culture, ranging from traditional tea ceremonies to modern anime. By promoting a higher awareness of Japan, JCA hopes to gain a greater understanding of its own culture.
Brown Korean American Students Association (KASA)
KASA indends to foster the understanding of Koreans and Korean Americans. KASA functions primarily as a catalyst for strengthening the Korean American community on campus. This is achieved through various social, political, and community service events that enable the voices and opinions of the Korean American student body to be heard. KASA also aims to raise the awareness of the cultural and ethnic attributes that students of Korean heritage possess.
Brown South Asian Students Association (SASA)
SASA embraces South Asian and South Asian American culture and identity within the contexts of the Third World community, the university campus, and the greater global community. It celebrates the diversity of South Asian culture while seeking to explore the facets of a pluralistic identity. SASA hopes to empower a community that is shaped by the varied social, cultural, and political concerns of South Asians on this campus. Everyone, regardless of ethnic background, is welcome to take an active role in sharing and appreciating a South Asian experience.
Brown Students on Singapore (SOS)
Students on Singapore was formed by a group of students from the Republic of Singapore. It aims to provide a support network for new Singaporean students, helping them settle into the demanding life at Brown University. Students on Singapore also aims to foster a lasting rapport with the local community through services and contributions.
Brown Thai Student Association (TSA)
TSA’s goal is to build a community of people who are from Thailand, people who are interested in and want to learn more about any aspect of Thailand, and people who just want to meet some friendly Thai people. TSA’s events include cultural shows such as "Legend of the SEA" and "The Multi-Cultural Show." Past events also include free Thai cooking lessons and inter-school fundraisers to help promote activities such as building a library in the rural area of Thailand.
Brown Vietnamese Student Association (VSA)
The VSA seeks to raise awareness of Vietnamese culture in the Brown community as well as provide a social network for its members. We welcome Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese individuals alike. Activities include involvement in cultural assemblies, celebrating the holidays, discussing current issues in Vietnam, and participating in events that connect people to the Vietnamese culture and traditions.
