Investigations have been launched against the family of former President Chen after a notification from the Swiss Merill Lynch Bank that large amounts of money were being transferred across his daughter-in-law’s accounts. In the afternoon, Chen admitted that his wife had illegally kept campaign funds remaining from his four previous elections for the presidency and Taipei City mayorship. The money in Chen’s oversea accounts are estimated at a whooping $1 billion NTD! Taiwanese prosecutors are now seeking aid from Swiss federal agencies.
On the other hand, after defeating the Netherlands 5-0, the Taiwanese national baseball team loses to heavy favorites Japan 6-1 in the second round of the Beijing Olympics. However, it still retains a good chance of advancing into the semifinals.
