Mechina: A Preparation movie showing. Tuesday, September 13th.

"During a time when Israel has taken a blow across the country, the film challenges the negative portrayal of Israelis and the Israeli army in particular. Mechina: A Preparation examines the life of Israeli and American teens before they enter the army and the university, respectively. The film is a powerful documentary about Israeli teens before they enter the army. Produced and directed by Maital Guttman, who graduated from Duke University last May, Mechina: A Preparation reveals a side of Israel unseen in the media, a side that exposes the people beyond the conflict and beneath the uniform.

In the summer of 2004, Maital launched a journey to discover what it means to be eighteen in Israel. Living with Amitai and his five friends as they prepare for their army service, she uncovers the complexity of being young and idealistic in a time of war, as the teens transition from students to soldiers. The film premiered to a diverse audience of more than five hundred Jewish and non-Jewish students and has been shown to students from universities across the world."
