Bhangra, hiphop, garba/raas, lyrical, South Asian classical, salsa, Bollywood — you name the dance style, and we have someone working on tying it into our next piece. Brown UniversityOf course, all of us at SASA are also full-time students at Brown University, which in our humble opinions is the best college ever! Brown University was founded in 1764 and is a member of the prestigious Ivy League. Perhaps Brown's biggest advantage is its unique New Curriculum, which allows students to take any course for pass/fail credit and bypasses the need for a core set of classes required for graduation. |
Awaaz Journal of ArtsAwaaz Journal of Arts is the only journal at Brown dedicated to providing a voice for the South Asian experience. Pieces in our bi-annual publications have include both written (essays, poetry, fiction, lyrics, etc.) and visual (painting, drawing, 3-D art, photography, typographic forms, etc.) pieces. Both English and non-English texts are accepted. All submissions are welcome. |
Year of IndiaBrown University has dedicated 2009-2010 to advancing the understanding of India’s people, culture, economy, and politics – and their growing impact around the world. The Year of India features an exciting program of major public lectures, art exhibits, performances, academic conferences, media presentations, and other explorations of India's dramatic rise on the global stage. |
Brown Muslim Students AssociationThe Brown Muslim Students Association seeks to meet the social, spiritual, cultural, and intellectual needs of Muslim students on the Brown and RISD campuses. The BMSA seeks to provide a warm, welcoming, and accessible community open to all who identify as or with Muslims and the Muslim community regardless of personal belief or degree of practice. All are welcome to BMSA events and activities held on campus. |
South Asia at BrownSouth Asia at Brown is Brown University's equivalent of a South Asian Studies Department. Faculty with teaching and research interests in South Asia and South Asian languages, an array of student organizations reflecting the diversity of South Asia itself, the Haffenreffer Anthropology Museum, and the Rhode Island School of Design's RISD Museum all come together to provide scholarly and cultural resources for the study of South Asia at Brown. |
Brown Hindu Students AssociationBrown Hindu Students Association (HSA) is a faith-based organization, forming a community for students who follow or are interested in the Hindu Dharma, scriptures and way of life. Our activities include weekly meetings centered on topics of interest to members; examples of past discourse: women in Hindu tradition, karma, nonviolence, marriage and family. We have also worked in conjunction with other organizations such as the Brown Muslim Student Association, the Chaplains Office, and SASA. Our biggest events tend to be Holi and Diwali celebrations. The HSA functions and weekly meetings are open to all. |
Third World CenterThe Third World Center is designed to serve the interests and meet the needs of all Third World students and to promote racial and ethnic pluralism in the Brown community. Every November, the Third World Center sponsors South Asian Identity Week as part of Asian/Asian American History Month — during South Asian Identity Week, lectures and workshops pertaining to South Asian and South Asian American issues are held around campus. |
South Asian Women's CollectiveThe South Asian Women's Collective is an organization that serves the needs of South Asian women on Brown's campus. The group is a safe space for women to get together and discuss issues relevant to them. Events include book discussions, collaborations, political conversations, and conversations about identity. All women are welcome to attend our events, regardless of ethnic identity or background. |
Asian American Alumni AllianceThe Asian American Alumni Alliance is a chartered organization of the Brown Alumni Association. It exists to encourage and facilitate positive experiences and engagement with the University, to act as a conduit and faciltator to adequately address the needs of the Brown Asian and Asian American community, and to build partnerships with members of the greater Brown community. |
Asian American History ProjectThe Asian American History Project consists of a group of multi-ethnic Asian American undergraduate students working to construct an open narrative of Asian/Asian American history at Brown since the 1960's. In acknowledging the people and movements that came before us, we hope to inspire, educate, and empower the current and future generation of Asian/Asian American students at Brown University. |
Hari Vidya BhavanHARI Vidya Bhavan is a language and culture school located at the Third World Center on the Brown University Campus in Providence, RI. The HARI School is run by a team of dedicated volunteers from the Indian/Indian American community. The school's mission statement is to provide Hindi language instruction and to foster a secular understanding of India's diverse cultural heritage in the New England Indian/Indian American community. |
Asian American Students AssociationThe Asian American Students Association (AASA) seeks to build a conscious, inclusive Asian American community through a commitment to reclaiming our identities as Asian Americans and people of color by critically examining our histories of colonialism and immigration and actively defining a space for Asian Americans in the Struggle for Third World liberation. |
India Association of Rhode IslandThe India Association of Rhode Island is the oldest and the preeminent social, cultural, and general welfare organization of the Indian-American community of Rhode Island and the surrounding areas. As a result of the unstinting efforts of the many volunteers who have given of themselves so selflessly over the course of three decades, the IARI's activities have showcased the best of India's culture and are popular with our community as well as non-Indian Americans. |
