Rhode island surfing pt. 2: The Seedy Undercurrent Gnarly? Tubular? Not! . . . by Gwyneth Fries / illustration by the author This is the second installment of Gwyneth Fries’ two-part series on surfing, Last week, Fries chronicled a few of her recent expeditions in “Love in the Time of Hurricane Season: Tales of a New England Surfer.” (See http://www.brown.edu/Students/INDY/article.php?id=177_5_1) Lee, a native surfer of Montauk, was one of our great guides in the hopefully life-long pursuit of this excellent sport. He brought us striped bass from a weeklong deep-sea fishing trip, during which he upchucked nine times. With any luck, people will soon be paying him to make custom surfboards instead. I asked Lee why people believed the surf in the East to be inferior to that in the West. In his humble, infinite knowledge of the ocean, he reminded me that the Atlantic is much smaller than the Pacific. Waves are born in the center of storms that develop far out in the ocean, according to the jet stream patterns and the fractal of natural physics of which most will probably remain ignorant. Circling winds pressure the waters into waves that grow over time into swells, developing energy with speed and distance from the point of origin. The largest waves charge along with high velocity winds that have been traveling in the same direction for thousands of miles, and have had the greatest amounts of time and distance in which to build. The great Pacific Ocean offers more possibilities for waves to become defined and clean and the long, flat coast of Califor nia lends itself to receiving surf from a variety of different directions. SURFING ON SINE WAVES I once heard a rumor that Rhode Island had the greatest amount of shoreline per total size of any state, and I believed it. The coast of Rhode Island is not straight and regular, but jagged with inlets. This means that one can access the ocean from various directions. Like on Cape Cod, in some places in Rhode Island it is possible to see the sun set over the ocean. Thus, for the exact opposite reason as California, Rhode Island is good for surfing; the variety of ocean access can accommodate waves coming from any number of directions. But there are reasons why Rhode Island is not the peak destination for professional surfers. It is not as though we are unaware of a Hawaii beneath us. Often the surf in Rhode Island is generated from eerily powerful winds. Unfortunately, waves that are not created through deep-sea storms and ground swells can be choppy and inconsistent. If you consider waves composed of energy as well as water, these waves could be considered insubstantial (I am fearful of how Neptune will punish me for this slight). A good clean wave has a clearly defined peak with a shadow developing beneath the lip as it begins to slip over the top, right before the break. A good offshore breeze will help to lift the top of the wave, giving it some curl-breeding hang time. Heavy winds that change direction, like those that assail Providence periodically, will chop up the surface of the water and allow for inconsistent peaks. With these conditions, whether or not a surfer is in the right place at the right time is a matter of luck and circumstance rather than experience and attention. One gloomy, windy day, I heard a short boarder mumble to himself, “I can’t believe I’m going out on a day like this.” I know this is lame, but sometimes I even get seasick. On many occasions, our wave-reading skills have been confounded by a lack of clarity in the sets. Sets are groups of waves that form way out in the ocean when wind waves become swells with energy from the ocean deep. Waves moving at similar speeds in similar directions come together in groups, sometimes overtaking each other and other sets. Waves move along a kind of conveyor belt, separate from the movement of the ocean, with big waves in the middle of a set getting smaller and disappearing towards the front, then reappearing in the back of the same set. Groups that form one after the other with slightly different period speeds will reach the shore with exaggerated time differences. This is kind of like how two cars traveling at slightly different speeds will arrive at their destination at different times; the distance determines the scale of the time difference. In the Pacific, waves that reach California have traveled long distances from their origins. They have better defined periods than those that reach New England from the Atlantic. The convergence of different storms, winds and systems in New England also makes it difficult for deep ocean sets to arrive as ground swells with any clarity and regularity.  One can discern the quality of the waves by considering a wide range of factors and reports when judging the day. Reading surf reports is the least delightful skill necessary for surfing in Rhode Island. It makes me feel obsessive and geeky. If you are actually cool, like Geology professor Jeff Albert, you know which beaches are best for winds coming from a variety of directions. Sound advice from those more experienced surfers, joined with a mental picture of the day’s Atlantic Ocean satellite footage, as well as attention to Surfline Forecasts have helped me avoid wasted anticipation. Lots of folks look at buoy reports, or what is called the LOLA forecast. I do not even know what LOLA stands for, but the website has a tan blonde with implanted tits to advertise its dependability. HOME BEACH ADVANTAGE While we are in the zone of negativity, let me also mention that wetsuits can really suck. Although I am in love with my 3:2 every time I feel toasty exiting the water, I loathe stretching as it squeezes to hold me with its neoprene ankles and wrists. At one point, my surfmate Liz held herself about a foot off the ground while I pulled her torso one way, and Jade tugged the wetsuit in the other direction. These days, measures of undressing are not so extreme, yet the act remains an unpleasant hassle without a heated changing room. Also, you will never feel more like an aqua alien than when you piss your wetsuit to stay warm. One of my sinful hopes is that these mentions of the downsides of surfing will dissuade newcomers from the water. It does not take an insightful intellectual to figure out that surfing is really cool, but its new wave of popularity endangers the old-timers and their way of life. Just like in California, there are men in Rhode Island who have been up to the same old tricks for decades. Only the East Coasters are worlds more hardcore, preferring the pride of weathering extreme temperatures to the fashion of rash guards and board shorts. Luckily for traditionalists, cold water is no more than a healthy natural barrier against the weak of heart. Chilly winds are only a seasonal deterrent, but locals have the entire year to do their worst, marking their territory by treating foreigners to acts of disdain. Going to a new break can feel like being underdressed at a dinner party—others don’t mind, but they notice, and you have to be a real prince to play it off with charm. Localism is the same looming, intangible sentiment that has kept me from mentioning the names of any specific surf spots in this article. A local named Kevin proudly told us some story about how he and his buddies attached a rope with a dummy on the end of it to the fender of a car with New Jersey plates. Damn Jersey kids had the gall to park near their beaches and enter their waters. “That’s not very nice,” we lovely ladies replied, unimpressed and a little wary—my plates are from the great state of Maine. We looked into his eyes and accused him outright of being the loser that wrote “asshole” in wax all over the windows and windshield of my car on one of our first early morning sessions. Kevin’s expression following our accusation was all but a verbal confession, but he conceded that just so long as we kept coming, people would begin to recognize our car and leave us in peace. Upon discovery of our defiled mobile, a different happy native surprised us with encouragement, “He was just writing a message to himself,” he said. The localism here is akin to small town New England wanting to protect its small town existence, but with an acute awareness of its own silliness. You do not surf once or twice a year. Surfing is not bowling. It is a time-consuming hassle worthy of daily obsession; waves compose your dreams and inspire your breath. Unfortunately for my territorial neighbors, I love both surfing and strangers enough to want to share my joy with anyone and everyone.
