| The Brown Running Club provides a community for runners in Providence, both recreational and competitive. We have weekly informal group runs as well as interval sessions. We also participate as a team in local races.
You do not have to be a Brown student, staff, or related to Brown in any way to take part in our runs, but it does help to have a Brown ID during the winter so you can get into the indoor track when we have workouts there.

Welcome back for the Spring semester! Although the weather has shown no signs of becoming spring-like anytime soon, we will be getting back into a regular running routine. Here's what's going on this winter:
Pizza Party - Group runs will still be every weekday at 5:30pm from the SciLi. This year we are starting a tradition of eating together once a week after the run. For the first official group run of the new semester (Wednesday, January 25), we would like to invite runners to join us after the run for pizza from Nice Slice. After this week, we will go to a different restaurant or pub each week, although people will have to buy their own food.
Upcoming Races - There are several races coming up in March, and one on Superbowl Sunday (Feb 6). The Brown Running Club has a team in the gym category for the three races of the Tour de Patrick. To join us in any or all of these races, use "brown" as the team username and password. Also, now is a great time to start training for the marathon or half marathon that is happening in Providence on May 1st.
Shape Up RI - For those of you who did not make it onto the running club's Shape Up RI team (which is now full), there is still time to sign up and join another team or create your own. This is worth considering, since the prizes are pretty good.
Winter Crosstraining - VeloSprints, an indoor bicycle racing phenomenon, is holding a college series starting on Monday, January 24th. Show up to 5 our of the 7 sessions and race 500 meters (this takes less than 30 seconds on a bike) to qualify for the grand prize at the end of the series. This could be a great way to build leg speed and stay active without freezing outside! Go to www.usopencycling.org/velosprints/ for more details.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed (or is still is enjoying) the winter break. Shape Up RI's 12 week challenge begins one month from today, and the Brown Running Club has a team! Please join our team and enter data on your activity once a week to be eligible to win sweet prizes. If you are a Brown employee, you can join for free - otherwise there is a $20 registration fee. This is more than worth it if you plan on taking advantage of any of the free classes offered to Shape Up RI participants. Anyone is welcome to join our team. You just need to use the team access code: RUN1415

Mini Track Meet Today!!!
Today is our fall mini meet! Everyone is invited to come and run whatever distance you like. Sprinters are especially encouraged to attend, since this is one of the few sprinting-friendly things the running club does all year. Some people have already said they'll be doing the mile and some sprints.
What is a mini meet, exactly? We'll meet at the Sci Li at 5:30 and jog to the Hope High School track (you can meet us there at 5:50 or so, if you prefer) and see what events everyone wants to run. We'll decide on an order of events -- if some people want to do two events, we'll make sure to have a long enough break between them so that you can recover. Then we'll proceed to the starting line and whomever wants to run, can run.
It usually takes about an hour from when we start the first event to when the last one is over. I think this will be our fifth mini meet, and all the others have been quite fun. If you're wondering whether you should come or not, please do! You'll have a good time.
There will also be a regular group run today for anyone who doesn't want to do the mini meet.

September 1, 2010
To all the new people who have joined over the summer, and to everyone who has returned from last year, Welcome!
Our first official big kick-off group run will be Tuesday, September 7 at 5:30 pm, meeting at the science library. This will allow all the new students who (hopefully!) will have signed up at Thursday's student activities fair to come to the first run. Please come! I anticipate there being lots of people, so everyone should be able to find someone else at their pace who wants to run their distance.
But why wait until Tuesday to start running together? If you want to run, go for it. Now is a good time to start using the listserv as a resource, e-mailing to ask people to join you in your run. Example: "Hi, I'm running 5 miles on Monday morning at 8 am. Please meet me at Blue State Coffee on Thayer St. I'll probably run about 9-minute pace per mile."
Volunteer tomorrow!!
Speaking of the student activities fair, it would be awesome if some people could come and stand at the table and recruit new students! The fair is from 7-10 pm this Thursday (September 2), in the OMAC. We are at table #137, at the far end of the track, in the next-to-outside ring. Please wear running apparel so that it is clear what we do from far away. If you plan to come, please send me an e-mail (and arrive a little before 7 if you can).
Schedule for this year:
Afternoon group runs: every day Monday-Friday at 5:30 pm
Morning group runs: Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 am
Track workouts: Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 pm, meet at the SciLi and proceed to Hope High School
Slower group day: Tuesday at 5:30 pm -- this is also the City Sports run
(all runs meet at the steps of the Science Library, the tall building at Thayer and Waterman streets)

Summer Running - For all of you who are still in Providence and would like to continue running throughout the summer, we have a summer e-mail list. Please e-mail Diana if you would like to be added to that list to be contacted for running during the summer. You can still e-mail the general listserv about anything relevant to everyone in the running club.
Red Rooster Ramble - Every Thursday until the first week of September there is a 5 mile road race in Warren at 6:30pm. This is only 10 miles down the East Bay bike path, or a short drive from Brown. If you'd like to bike there, we leave from the corner of Brook and Benevolent Streets at 5:30pm. To carpool, e-mail the summer listserv and see if anyone driving down has room in their car. There are usually people who both bike and drive there every week, so you won't be alone! Details of the race are at http://www.rirr.org/ramble.html

Group Run Schedule for the Spring Semester - Remember that we are meeting every weeday at the Science Library at 5:30pm. Please wear all the reflective gear you have, and if you have none, then light-colored clothing. We have taken to meeting inside the actual library lobby, since it is warmer, so come on in.
Monday: regular group run, or a track workout for anyone interested (if interested, bring your Brown/RISD ID so you can get into the OMAC)
Tuesday: Slow group day, plus City Sports day! If you run 9-10 minutes or more per mile, this is your day to come to running club. Also, everyone who doesn't already have one gets a City Sports T-shirt. Mike from City Sports will run with us, and we will meet back at the City Sports store after the run for refreshments and a 20% discount on all items (except Uggs). This means that reflective vests are only $16, hint hint.
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: regular group runs meeting at the Science Library. Runners of all abilities are welcome every day.
UPCOMING RACES – The Brown Running club has teams in both of the following races:
The St Pat’s 5k – Saturday, March 20, 2010 – Register online here: http://www.stpats5k.com/register/register.php Only the three fastest times per team count towards standings.
The Cox/Willowtree Marathon/Half Marathon/5k – Sunday, May 2, 2010 – Register here: http://www.coxrhoderaces.com/ To be on a college team in this race you must be a student (undergrad or graduate) at the university. The times for the fastest 100 finishers are added up and the lowest time wins. There’s also a prize for the team with the most finishers—I think we can take home both of these awards!
All of the above races start and finish in downtown Providence, and all races will give you a cool t-shirt for participating. To join our team, use the password: brown
Join our Shape Up RI Team! – We have a team in the running for Shape-Up-RI. This is a 12-week program that involves recording your steps, minutes exercised, and weight. We’re competing against other teams in Rhode Island to have the most minutes of exercise and the most steps! I don’t know how well we’d do in the weight loss category, as many runners do not need to lose that much weight, but we should easily be able to win in the other categories. You can still sign up until February 21st, by going to http://shapeupri.org/ and using “RUN7088” as the team access code. You’ll get a free pedometer out of it, and will be allowed to attend various classes such as spinning, yoga, dance, etc. for free (listed on their calendar).
Singlets - We have lovely Brown Running Club singlets for just $10! They are white, with the very cool Brown Running Club logo. Haynes likes them so much, he bought three! If you'd like to buy one, e-mail Diana to let her know a day you are coming to the group run and your size, and she will bring it for you. What is a singlet? A singlet is a sort of sleeveless tank top for racing that is much lighter than a T-shirt, so it makes you run faster and look more awesome. It also tells spectators which team you are on. See a photo of the women’s singlet
Recent race results:
The Brown Running Club competed at the Super 5k on Sunday, February 7th, in Narragansett, RI - a scenic but cold and windy course along the ocean. The team of Melissa Henry, Erin Hannen, and Diana Davis won the women's team competition, finishing first out of four teams by a narrow margin of only two points! Melissa's race was especially noteworthy, as she ran the last mile in six minutes flat to overtake the woman in front of her, and finish third overall, just a few seconds off of her PR (personal best time) in the 5k. This was Erin's first race back after a long recovery from injuries, and she finished in fine form. Diana improved by 50 seconds from her time last year at this race. Each team member went home with a bottle of wine and a bag of bagels. Frequent group run attendee Alan Bernier also finished third overall. Like racing? There are lots of local races in the upcoming months. If you find a race that isn't listed, tell Diana or Sarah and we'll add it. If you want to go to a race, e-mail the listserv to see if others are also interested and want to ride-share or form a team.
