Areas Concert Postponed!

Hello BOP fans!

As a result of University closure in anticipation of the approaching storm, we are compelled to announce that the

Winter Arias Concert is POSTPONED.
It will no longer be held tomorrow, but will be RESCHEDULED for April some time after the Spring Opera.  Watch for future updates as we figure out the details!  In the meantime, get excited for Dido & Aeneas, with performances March 15-17th.
Stay warm this weekend!

Spring 2013 Arias Concert

Dust off your favorite arias, because…

BOP is announcing its Winter Arias Concert!

The concert will be Friday, February 8th at 7:30 PM, and it will be a great opportunity to show off what you’ve been working on!  You can perform an aria or art song from any time period and in any language– something from voice lessons or something you prepared yourself. We would also love to hear some duets!  There will be a dress rehearsal before the concert to make sure everyone is ready to perform.

It will not be a huge time commitment, so we really encourage everyone to participate! Once we get our final list of singers and accompanists, we’ll pair you up so you can start practicing.

Singers and pianists: If you are interested in singing an aria or being an accompanist, email Sophie (sophie<underscore>van<underscore>horne<at>brown<dot>edu). We will have you do an informal audition to be added to the program.

BOP presents…

DIE FLEDERMAUS
(the bat)

by Johann Strauss
directed by Audrey Chait ’11
musical direction by Jacob Klapholz ’13

March 18-20, Alumnae Hall
Music and dialogue to be performed in English

You won’t want to miss out on BOP’s biggest adventure yet! Join us for a tale of disguise, shenanigans, and music that will make you grab your seatmate and waltz him/her around Alumnae Hall. Also, lots and lots of champagne.

The Plot: Once upon a time, Gabriel von Eisenstein got drunk with his friend Dr. Falke, and at the end of the night left the poor guy passed out in the middle of town, dressed as a bat. To get revenge, Dr. Falke invites Eisenstein, who has been sentenced to jail for eight days (for a piddling offense), out for one last wild night at Prince Orlovsky’s ball. Little does Eisenstein know that his wife, his maid, and the head of the prison have also been invited, all in disguise! Drunken hijinks ensue, and though Act III takes place in a jail, everything works out in the end.

Musicians! Interested in playing in the pit? Email Jacob (jacob_klapholz@brown.edu).

Want to get involved in the production? Interested in Technical Direction, Lights, Sets, or Costume design? Email Audrey (audrey_chait@brown.edu) with questions, ideas, and general interest.

New to theater or opera, but want to get your feet wet? Working on a BOP spring opera, one of the biggest shows on campus, is a lot of fun and great theatrical experience. Email Audrey if you are generally interested in being involved in the production–we’d love to have you.

LOVE, BOP

The 2011 Winter Arias concert is right around the corner!

The concert will be Friday, February 11th. It should be a great time to enjoy hearing some great arias! It will be a very fun performance with a reception afterward. If you are interested in singing, any aria or art song from any time period and in any language is welcome.  Email natalie_kleeman@brown.edu for information. Date and time TBD.

Welcome, new board members!

The BOP board became an even more joyous place at the end of last semester, when we welcomed three promising youngsters to our ranks. Ivy Alphonse-Leja ’14, Natalie Kleeman ’13, and Jacob Klapholz ’13 will help BOP make great opera for years to come. (Well, two or three years, but in college that is a lot of years.) Congrats, guys!

Scenes Concert Update!

Hey BOP!

It’s audition time! So unwrap that Ricola coughdrop, dust off your favorite music, and come impress us.  This year’s program will include selections from:

CARMEN by Georges Bizet
THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO by WA Mozart
L’ELISIR D’AMORE by Gaetano Donizetti
OPERATIC BAR-SONGS MASHUP compiled by Mr. Joseph Rim, Esq., ’12

*NOTE: the exact program is subject to revision, depending on the breakdown of voice parts. The show will be in the Underground, on November 12th and 13th.

Please prepare a song or aria (can be from any time period or genre) that shows your voice well. You may be asked to read sides, which will be provided at the audition. Auditions will be held Thursday the 21st from 6-8PM in the ADPhi lounge (in Goddard House, on Patriot’s Court), and Friday the 22nd from 3-5 in Vartan Gregorian Quad, Room 116 (that’s in New Dorm–we’ll have signs out). If you want to try out but can’t make either of those times, email Audrey (audrey_chait@brown.edu) and we’ll find a time for you to sing. It will be a party. Email if you have any questions.

See you there!
