Evangelion: Death(true)2

Posted by Paul McCann on March 7th, 2008

Some of you out there have been waiting a while for this; here it is at last, the first of the Evangelion movies.

This is director’s recut of the first twenty-four episodes into seventy minutes; full of new animation, this is no clip show, but another glimpse into the story of Evangelion requiring no prior experience with the series.

We’ll follow this up with the director’s cuts of the original final episodes, twenty-five and twenty-six, which are something like the experience of the main characters undergoing Freudian psychoanalysis while on hallucinogens.

Showing will be 7PM Saturday in Barus & Holley 190.

Also keep an eye out for next weekend, which should be our mid-semester marathon.

NANA

Posted by Paul McCann on March 1st, 2008

Apologies for the short notice, but today at 7PM in our usual B&H190 we’ll be showing the first several episodes of NANA. From ANN:

“On board the train to Tokyo to meet her boyfriend Shoji, Nana Komatsu (”Hachi”) happened to sit beside Nana Osaki who was traveling to Tokyo to fulfill her dreams of becoming a musician. The vocalist for her punk band “Blast”, Nana aims for a major debut for “Blast” in Tokyo where her boyfriend, Ren, is the guitarist for a popular band “Trapnest”. Sharing the same name “Nana”, both girls quickly form a bond of friendship. Their paths cross again when they encounter each other while searching for accomodation in Tokyo. Eventually they decide to live together in the same unit and this further strengthens their bond as the two “Nana(s)” go through their love lives and career in Tokyo.”

Hope to see you there.

Aria the Natural

Posted by Paul McCann on February 22nd, 2008

This weekend we’ll be showing select episodes of Aria the Natural, the story of the day-to-day adventures of some gondoliers in the city of Neo-Venezia on a terraformed Mars.

The episodes you’ll see are some of the show’s most exciting, covering some of the encounters of the main character with Cait Sith, mysterious King of the Cats.

Full of wonder, Aria is a smooth and satisfying ride, something like a more light-hearted and optimistic Kino’s Journey.

Barus & Holley 190, 7PM.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Posted by Paul McCann on February 6th, 2008

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a series from Gainax (makers of Evangelion and FLCL) that recently finished its run. We’ll be showing the first four episodes this weekend.

In the distant future, people build their homes and raise domestic animals in subterranean caverns. As a result, they live in fear of the occasional earthquake and cave-in, and have been for hundreds of years. Jeeha is one such village.

One day, a boy named Simon happens to find a small, shiny drill whilst digging to expand the village. At the same time, Kamina, a guy who believes that there is another land above the village, persuades a gangster to break through the ceiling in order to leave the cavern. Suddenly, an earthquake occurs and the ceiling collapses, followed by a big robot breaking through the ceiling.

Kamina is now sure that there is a world above them. Recklessly, he begins to fight against the robot. At that moment, another person appears from the land above. It is a girl by the name of Yoko. With a rifle in hand, she had been tracking the robot. However, all she could do was distract it. Then, Simon shows what he had found to Kamina and Yoko. It`s a mysterious robot whose head is also its body.

From that point, the series ventures into typically marvellous Gainax combat scenes with a high-energy comedic twist.

Usual time & place: 7PM Saturday, Barus & Holley. Hope to see you there.

Spriggan

Posted by Paul McCann on January 31st, 2008

This weekend we’ll be showing Spriggan, a movie exhibiting all of the skill and none of the experimental tendencies of the much-beloved Studio 4°C and showing the involvement of part of the team involved in the making of Akira (though there is only one child with powerful psychic abilities here). This is an unrelenting stream of stylish action that’ll keep your leg bouncing.

A plot summary:

Arcam is a secret, worldwide organization investigating artifacts from a lost civilization. When three of their investigators go to Mt. Ararat, in Turkey, they discover what they believe is the wreck of Noah`s Ark. Their joy is short-lived, and so are they-the relic projects a powerful, destructive energy which wipes out not only the team but three Pentagon satellites as well. Quickly, Arcam and the US military are battling for the Ark`s secret. Arcam`s trump card is their super-powered warrior agents, called Spriggans. One Spriggan, a high school student named Yu Ominae is dragged into the fray. He makes his way to Turkey to confront the Pentagon`s platoons. Of course, the Americans have super-soldiers of their own, including the human tank Fat-Man and the vicious Little Boy. The bullets are soon flying en masse, in what has become a holy war for the future of the human species.

Saturday 7PM, Barus & Holley 190.
