AEΠ Brothers, Pledges, and Alumni chilling together for Spring Weekend on the main green in 2008

AEΠ offers its members far more than parties, study breaks, and housing; it is a community in the truest sense of the word, providing grounding during the rapid changes we undergo while at college. Through the range of interests, personalities, and intellectual pursuits within AEΠ, brothers, by sharing in one another’s lives, are naturally immersed in the diversity of Bruno culture. Joining AEΠ is the single greatest decision you can make towards being happy at college and is by far the best way to take advantage of the vast opportunities afforded by a Brown Education. In AEΠ, you will find people whose friendship not only inspires you now but will continue in whatever you do or wherever you go and that is truly an incredible thing.

AEΠ is far more than the parties you heard us throw this fall or a place to light the menorah during Chanukah. Please read on, find some events that intrigue you from the list below, and introduce yourself to us in the coming weeks! We look forward to meeting you and showing you why AEΠ means so much to us.

Don’t believe the hype! The word fraternity typically conjures up images of WASPy “bros”, separatist elitism, mindless substance abuse, dirty/disgusting housing, and sadistic paddlings. Yet, to dispel some of these myths, Caleb Miller of the Xi pledge class, class of ’09, presents to you:

"5 things you didn’t know about AEΠ"

  1. We’re (mostly) nice Jewish Boys- AEΠ is a national Jewish fraternity that espouses Jewish values and maintains an appreciation of Jewish heritage and tradition on campus. That being said, while events like our annual Bar Mitzvah bash remain a brotherhood favorite, our yearly Christmas parties and sizable non-Jewish population also express the diversity within our brotherhood. And while we do have a solid entourage of brothers that go to Hillel every week, many others have yet to set foot in the building. So whether you consider yourself a “Woody Allen,” “Karl Marx,” “Adam Sandler,” or “insert random gentile here,” AEΠ welcomes all young men of the Brown community who would contribute, grow, and excel in our brotherhood. “Mel Gibson”s need not apply.
  2. AEΠ is an integral part of the Brown Community- We breed leaders on campus like bunnies. AEΠ values leadership and teaches our members an immense about it. And with brothers participating in everything from the Fencing Team, the Volleyball Team, the Rugby Team, mentoring groups, WBRU, the Brown Debate Union, the Brown Band, Model UN, Reslife, and a number of a capella groups, AEΠ is anything but isolated. We view our brotherhood as a strong base of friendship from which brothers can participate in the greater Brown community, succeed academically, and have a helluva time doing it.
  3. AEΠ prides itself on having a good time- Whether hosting Body Chemistry, Oktoberfest, or any of the other cocktails AEΠ throws during the year, we know how to party. But we do plenty else too. Our brothers’ calendar is packed every week with movie nights, dinners, BBQs, poker games, local sports events, wine tastings, mini golf, snow football, and even the occasional trip to Boston. Additionally, AEΠ is a huge fan of intramural sports, as we always are among the best teams in football, soccer, softball, Frisbee, hockey, and basketball leagues. For anyone who has never played a game of pool in our lounge, had an intellectual conversation in our striped room, or enjoyed a drink in our refurbished bar, know that there is always a strong core of AEΠ brothers each semester dedicated to making sure we all enjoy ourselves.
  4. Marcy House rules- AEΠ prides itself on maintaining a clean and awesome place to live. We have a new bar, a crystal clear 65-inch HDTV, a pool table, new couches, a fireplace, a library with comfy chairs, and a huge kitchen featuring a beautiful new countertop. Not to mention, we’re on Wriston Quad, right next to the Ratty and at the social center of the Brown community. And you don’t have to bother with the infamous Housing Lottery. Ever. None of these are singular reasons to join a fraternity, but they are definitely reasons for checking it out.
  5. AEΠ does not haze those who are about to be our Brothers- AEΠ believes that the best relationships are forged through collective accomplishments, learning experiences, and having a good time together. Pledging is not about being “someone’s bitch”, but about getting to know and having fun with the people who you will be associated with for the rest of your time at Brown. Therefore, while AEΠ encourages an atmosphere of practical joking and responsible partying, we do not haze.

Personally, joining AEΠ was the best decision I’ve made in college. It’s the place I know I can come home to every day, and no matter what else is going on in my life, have 40 of my best friends at my side. But you don’t know me personally, so I suggest you find out for yourself what AEΠ is about, come over, and meet some of the brothers.
